Well, it's official. February is upon us. The month some people love, and some people love to hate. With hearts, flowers and cupids all around, it either makes you gush with love, or want to poke the next person who says "awww" in the eye.

We hear ya...and although we are all about the love and mushy stuff, we think it's equally important, if not more, to show love where it matters most. To yourself.

As Buddha put it:

You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.

Self-love is my thing this year. As much as I have an abundance of love and affection from my Mr., I know that in order to truly be happy, that love must come from within. In an effort to stop being so hard on myself, take pride in the things I have done, and pat myself on the back every once in a while, I've realized it's not selfish to sometimes be selfish. It's essential.

So - If you're feeling the same, I encourage you to take all the Love Day hoopla and run with it. Be inspired to love YOU. Indulge in a spa day, get a new hair style, or buy yourself something pretty. We've got that last one covered - which hasn't been a challenge with all the amazing, meaningful pieces that have been spotted on our shelves lately. Hello Friends!

I know what you're thinking. FINALLY! A POST! If you follow us on facebook (click the sidebar to join the party), you know we are still alive and well and hearting accessories more than ever. We've just been a lil busy getting the beginning of this blissful year organized...we promise to pay more attention to our blog and keep you up to date on all the happenings from here on in.

That being said, there's a LOT to catch up on since December - so, I just wanted to shine a little light on our media attention as of late. We kinda get overly excited when people call and want to feature us in their spots/mags/newspapers....and we do LOVE the attention!

My Job Could Be Your Life: Natalie Colalillo of I Heart Accessories

In this week's edition of our career-advice column, we learn the pros and cons of going into business for yourself.

In 30 seconds or less, tell me what you do all day at work.
I’m the store’s sole owner, so each day I check email, order new stuff for the store, merchandise, serve customers, update the website and manage social media—everything, really.
How did you first become interested in starting your own business?
When I was in university, my parents—who have been in the home-décor retail business for 20 years—helped me start up a little side business. It kind of stayed with me; whatever I was doing, I sold jewellery and accessories on the side as a hobby. My parents had an in with a lot of suppliers, and they would take me on their buying trips, so that really helped. I became familiar with where to go and what to get. And then one day I just decided that I needed to be my own boss, and I had always pictured myself owning my own shop. I work in the store five or six days a week, and I have a part-time employee who helps me one or two days a week.
What is it about accessories in particular that inspired you to go into retail?
I’ve always been really interested in accessorizing outfits I have rather than shopping for new clothes. I’ve always shopped simple in terms of clothing, and then used accessories to make my outfit exciting. I find it really fun. Here, we offer a wide range of accessories rather than just jewellery, as a lot of other stores do. My customers know that they can bring an outfit or a picture of an outfit into the store, or they can describe an outfit to me, and we can accessorize them from head-to-toe.
Once you decided what kind of business you wanted, how did you go about finding a location and establishing the store?
I took a year to write a business plan, and then it came down to deciding what size of space I was looking for and what kind of neighbourhood I wanted to be in. I really wanted the store to be a bit more high-end than your average cheap-accessories store, but not so high-end that people couldn’t afford it. I was looking for something much larger, but then I found this space (on Yonge, north of Eglinton) and I realized that it was actually the perfect size for what I want to do. Now, it’s actually worked in my favour; a lot of people call the store a “hidden gem,” or say to their friends that they have to check it out because it’s so small but has the greatest things.
When you first opened for business, how did you build a customer base?
It took a little while to get busy; even now, people are still finding out about us. I still get people saying, “Oh, I didn’t even know you were here,” and we’re in our third year. But the good thing is that customers keep coming back. In our first year, it was all about people finding us, and now our focus is on our really great base of return customers.
What’s something people should know before they open their own business?
It’s really important to have a plan, and to set goals that are attainable. It’s also important to keep in mind that it’s a life-long commitment. I always say that it’s equally as challenging as starting a family, because it takes up all of your time. I don’t have kids, but, as with a family, you have to be a 100 per cent committed to make a real go of it.
What are you favourite and least favourite parts of your job?
My favourite part is that I get to wake up every day and work for me; my least favourite part is that I have to wake up every day and work for me! It’s a challenge when you’re the only owner, because you don’t have partners or people to bounce ideas off of, so I try to seek out mentors in order to do that. But actually, the challenges have become my favourite parts of the job.

Laura's Top Three Wish List

Christmas is creeping up on us quickly and is just around the corner! Coincidentally, the month of December is when I start noticing more and more things that I suddenly decide I absolutely need. Normally, I would try to convince myself I don’t need to get that sparkly necklace even though it would look perfect with that outfit in my closet. But with Christmas, I don’t resist temptations. I just take detailed notes about the item, and with my fingers crossed, casually slide the page across the table to a loved one. The new arrivals at I Heart Accessories have definitely caused me to start making mental lists of things I want for myself, and for others. After all, it is the season of giving, it's not ALL about me. However, this post is. Here is my "Top Three Wish List" from I Heart Accessories.

1. Scarves

I love scarves. Soft, silky, patterned or plain, I love them all. Many times the perfecting detail of an outfit is a scarf in a matching or contrasting colour. Every time I Heart Accessories gets new scarves I get a little excited and look them all over. This is why I definitely have to include a scarf on my wish list.

Our new infinity scarves are so soft and plush that I immediately knew they would be perfect for filling this gaping hole in my accessories. You really can’t help but want to cozy up with one and I know they would not only look amazing, but also help keep me nice and warm.

2. Pom Pom Hats

Now why ask for just a scarf when you can get a hat too? It's Christmas, remember? When I first saw our pom pom hats I just couldn’t figure out how I have survived this long without one. They come in a variety of styles and colours. With one of these and a matching scarf, I can relax knowing that not only are my ears warm, but I look pretty great too. Was that vain?

3. Feather Headbands

This is the last thing on my list (at the moment). They have a sleek black band with a feather detail on top in a variety of colours and patterns. With all the style options, it has been impossible for me to narrow it down to just one. When I am at school working in the studio, I always have to wear my hair in a ponytail for safety reasons and because it is easier to concentrate. One of these hair bands will take my ponytail to the next level and make it less a matter of safety, and more a style choice. Who says you can’t look good while following the rules and being safe? I'm taking a stand.

I usually never know what to ask for at Christmas, but being a part of I Heart Accessories definitely helps with that. So, if any of my family and friends are reading this, consider this my subtle hint at what I would like under the tree this year.

Winter Snapshots

HUE to the ResCUE!

Fall is here. As much as you don’t want it to be, it’s here. And although bare legs and sandals just won’t work anymore (this past weekend was an exception), this doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your cute skirts and dresses, it just means you have to add a little extra warmth. This is where we save your life: we have a bunch of new Hue tights and socks that will complete any Fall look. Feel better? Good.

Either patterned or plain, adding a pair of tights underneath your dress, skirt, or even shorts, can add the extra warmth you need to brave the changing seasons. So you’re thinking – “what if my legs are already covered with those things called pants?”. Don’t worry, we’ve thought of you too. Last night as I ran to and from my car multiple times in the rain storm, with nothing but ballet flats on my feet, I was really wishing I had some cozies on my tozies.

Luckily, we have some socks that feel just like your favourite baggy, cozy, knitted sweater which are perfect for under boots, and others that you can wear with flats or a dressier shoes.

Here's the deal. HUE socks and tights are made with incredible quality. We are pretty loyal to this brand, since we have personally fallen in love with everything we've ever tried from them. It’s okay, you don’t need to feel ashamed. We all have the balls of tangled chains, missing earrings, bracelets strewn across our table, and rings scattered throughout the room. It is a fact of life really, something all accessory lovers have to find a way to deal with. Half the time we spend getting ready can be on hunting down and untangling the accessory we desperately want to wear. When you are strapped for space and time, sometimes keeping everything in little dishes and drawers just isn’t an option, and organization seems impossible to achieve. It is time to take a stance, time to teach your accessories whose boss and as much as they want to, they can’t take over your entire room. Claim back that time spent searching and untangling. Your schedule will thank you for it and suddenly, getting ready will flow much smoother. Hey, you may even be able to reunite a few earrings with their pair during the process, or discover the long lost ring that you’ve always loved. I know we really don't have to tell you this, but I Heart Accessories is here to help you with all your acessa-mess woes.

We recently restocked on a wide range of jewellery stands and accessory organizers in a bunch of styles. Some are whimsical and fun, while others straight to the point and very serious about their job, but still look good. The great thing about these pieces, is that they display all your things so you can see everything in one glance. Often, when things are kept in dishes or drawers we have to search through them to find what we want and a lot of the time we even forget about some pieces that we own. Our organizers can help you quickly see what your different options are for completing your outfit and make sure that nothing great gets lost in the crowd.

My favourites of the bunch are the tree shaped ones that come in three different styles. We have used these to display our jewellery for quite a while and have always gotten compliments on them. They have twisted branches so your necklaces, bracelets, and rings don’t slip off as well as loops to hook your earrings into. Pick up a tree and have fun decorating it with all your jewels, the final product looks amazing and almost like a little art piece.

We also have a range of holders in silver that can be for more specialized purposes. For those of us that have more earrings than we can count, there are holders that have rows of holes perfect for all styles of earrings. With these, you can easily keep track of all you have and not worry about missing pairs. There are also some with straight bars that are great for sliding bracelets onto or hanging and looping your necklaces so you don’t ever have to frustratingly untangle some chains.

De-cluttering the accessa-mess can be a headache and often falls to the bottom of our list of things to do. It is easy to just toss items on the table or in a drawer while rushing to get ready, but this just results in scratched, lost, and tangled things that cause even more pain later. Time for a Change

My most recent personal accessory choice has been inspired by this week's back to school extravaganza. Maybe it's because all those Staples commercials got me in the mood, or the fact that I never know what time it is...? but recently, I have decided to wear a watch. This is a big deal for me, as I've actually never been a watch person. The Mr. in my life is the opposite. He has an entire collection of watches that he perfectly matches with each outfit, as well as their very own case, with leather interior to boot. He's got this whole watch thing down...and I must say, I enjoy knowing that even if I don't know what time it is, he always will.

I have purchased myself many watches...and even remember my dad giving me a Snoopy Tennis watch exactly like this one:

But I never cared that it told time. I just enjoyed watching Snoopy hit the tennis ball. This watch is pretty cool, am I right?

Evidently, I haven't changed a bit. When we received our new shipment of watches last week...I excitedly unwrapped each one just to see the beauty of shiny newness. "Which one will I buy myself ?!?" went through my mind a few times. Then "Who am I kidding?...I'm not a watch girl." Which is true, I'm totally not. Call me a rebel, but I just don't feel as though I NEED to know what time it is badly enough to wear it on my wrist at all times.

I do however, enjoy bling. So naturally, when I saw this sparkly baby, I knew it had to be mine. And it is. It's on my wrist right now. I don't even know if the time is right on it, nor does it matter. It's just so pretty.

So - necessity or not, I have decided to follow in the footsteps of my significant other, who clearly knows the drill when it comes to timepieces. Meaning, I'll need to treat myself to more of these lovelies, to go with more of my outfits. It just so happens that we have quite the nice collection on our shelves at the moment. Here are a few that I've been spying with my little eye.

So, maybe I've become a watch girl. People can be watch people for different reasons, and those reasons don't always have to include knowing the time. Once I find my Snoopy watch, I will have started a collection of two...soon to be many. This is a milestone.

Laura's Faves in Fall Trends

Gorgeous trends are starting to make an appearance for fall! There are way too many amazing styles and materials popping up on runways to cover them all, but I thought I would go over some of my favourites in the accessory world.

Once again, we're in luck. Fall runways are showing big, statement pieces in a variety of styles, and you know how much we heart statement! Some are pulling from art deco and gothic influences while others are going back to vintage styles with large metal chokers and cuffs. Collar necklaces are the common style being seen, with tons of beads and chains to make sure all eyes stay on you. I must admit, in the past, I've gone more towards simple, dainty pieces for myself, but since I started working at I Heart Accessories, I'm pretty excited to leap forward and commit to one like this for fall...

Laura's 3 Shop Faves

I love blog posts like this because they give me a reason to walk around the store and examine all our lovely items. We have been getting in a lot of new pieces lately, here are my three favourite at the moment.

Feather earrings are HUGE right now. They are definitely the trend of the summer, and since we try to stay on top of those, we just got a bunch of really nice ones in. Our feather earrings come in all different colours so you can go bold with pink or be subtle with grey. There aren’t any rules on how to wear these so some are choosing to wear a pair and others are wearing just one. It is really up to you what you think looks best. We took this into consideration and are selling our earrings as $12 each or a pair for $20. Some our fave celebs rock them too.

A couple years ago I made an imprint of a leaf on some silver to turn into a necklace. I thought I had done a pretty good job of capturing all the veins, until I saw a pair of earrings we recently got in. These earrings capture all the intricate veins on the back of a leaf and the detail is just amazing! It was love at first site with these and I am very tempted to snatch them up for myself. They are $24 and if you are interested, I suggest you act fast before I decided to get them for myself.

A bonus is that they are also super shiny and while making some new dare to compares earlier, I stumbled across these similar leaf earrings by Silver Rush that are $208.50, so the price is right too.

When I was checking out all our new merchandise, this necklace stood out to me the most. With rows of peach, purple, and pink beads on a gold chain, the combination of these colours is what drew me to this necklace. It is girly, fun, and cute without being over the top, and the colour combination is just perfect for summer.

It is a little bit of a blessing and a curse working at I Heart Accessories. I get to be surrounded by beautiful things all the time and I can’t complain about that aspect. The only downfall is the temptation. I often find myself wanting to buy things every time we get new products; this post is a perfect example of that. Sunglass Mishmash: What's Right For Your Face?

I don’t know about you, but I always dread shopping for sunglasses. I try on every pair possible and still cannot decide which ones look the best on me. Then, when I do find a pair, it seems to disappear the next summer so I have to repeat the whole process again. It is exhausting. I’ve decided to break the vicious cycle this year for those who also have sunglasses "issues", and write up a short guide for what type you should wear based on your face shape, because a great pair of sunglasses can perfectly finish off a look. At I Heart Accessories we carry a variety of styles all with UV 400 protection to make sure you look good while staying safe.

Generally, the most flattering frame shape is one that contrasts the shape of your face. Keeping that in mind, I’m going to break it down further.

Square Face

For those of you with a more angular, square shaped face, you should try oval and round frames. Find a pair that sit higher on the face, to minimize the jaw line. You could also try a narrow, longer frame to widen the eye area. Avoid square shaped frames, low set temples, or a colour accent along the bottom of the frame.

Oval Face

Oval faces have got it easy, the balanced proportions ensure that almost any frame shape will suit you, but try to find some frames that are wider or the same length as the widest part of your face. To add some angles to your curves, you could try geometric, rectangular shapes. Even though you can work almost anything, try not to go too big with the frame as it can overwhelm your features.

Oblong Face

Oblong faces are long and narrow. Choose a deep frame which covers the center of your face to shorten it. Broader sunglasses with some decorative elements around the top rim or temple can help to add width to your face shape. Avoid small and shorter frames.

Round Face

For round faces, the best way to compliment your shape is with contrasting straight or angular frames, like this season's popular cat-eye style. If you want to make your face appear narrower, choose a clear bridge over the nose and a rectangular or horizontal style that will work to widen your eye area. To lengthen the face, go with a slimmer frame or an upswept frame which will work to draw attention to the top of your face. You need to avoid small and short frames.

Heart Shaped Face

Heart shaped faces should be complimented with bottom-heavy frames that will work to add width to your lower face. Styles with a low set temple and narrow, round frames will work to draw attention down and soften your face. Avoid decorative temples and frames with heavy tops. Aviators work well for heart shapes.

Summer Fun OUTside of I Heart!

It's already the 15th of June! Am I the only one that thinks that's crazy?

We've had a super busy couple of weeks at the shop...and it's only getting busier! New beauties are arriving every few days, and like always, we love branching out of our cozy little space and into the hearts of others!

We are taking part in a couple great events this summer hosted by our faves in all the land.

This Thursday June 16th, (SO SOON!) is the much anticipated Divas in the City 2. Hosted by our friends at Divagirl Inc.

We will be showcasing some FAB new accessories that aren't even out on our shelves yet, plus, a whole bunch of amazing vendors, speakers, and martinis. If you're interested in networking and mingling with over a hundred other fabulous, driven and successful ladies, this is not an event to be missed.

On August 15th, Divagirl Inc., is doing it up again, but this time with the amazing gals at Shop Socials. If anyone knows how to put on a VIP event, complete with shopping, fashion shows, and all the latest designers and trends, it's these gals. Divalicious was awesome last year, so we're really looking forward to this one!

Wedding Season Accessory Bliss

It’s that time of year again! Time to get all teary eyed while a beaming couple gets married! Fancy or casual, a wedding is the time to dress your best and charm family and friends. We all know how stressful it can sometimes be to find the perfect outfit for these events, so here at I Heart Accessories we are trying to make things a little easier for you. In one stop you can get your hair-wear, evening bag, and jewellery. We're well equipped with this season's evening trends...here are a few examples.

Fascinators

We've mentioned these a couple of times, but how could we not?! Just because the royal wedding is over and we aren’t in England, doesn’t mean we can’t rock a fascinator at this year’s summer weddings. They are the perfect way to add some spunk or girly perfection to your look. Now when I say fascinators, I don’t mean the over the top questionable numbers we saw at Will & Kate's to-do. We have many options of more fashion friendly fascinators that won’t block the view of people sitting behind you. Since the May 2-4 weekend means summer has unofficially begun, our hearts and minds are set on the season. This summer, accessory trends are showing a lot of bright, bold and floppy. Here are a few of my fave looks, that are available at I Heart Accessories right now.

Bright Handbags & Wallets

As someone who loves bright colours and tries to infuse some in everything I wear, I am definitely loving all the colours seen out on the streets. Drab and dreary winter is over, it is time to spice things up! Have something neutral coloured you want to give a summer feel? Add a bright green purse to bring some life to your outfit, like the ones we are currently showcasing in our front window.

If you are more of a clutch person, then there are always our vibrant orange, pink, and blue ones, OR if the thought of committing to a bright purse scares you, opt for a bright wallet. We've got a cute selection of colours gracing our shelves.

Passionate about jewellery and accessories, this young lady is a student at OCAD University studying Material Arts and Design, and specializing in jewellery design and metalsmithing. She hopes that upon graduation from school she can start her own jewellery line and business, and I am quite pleased to show her the ropes. Lazy Updates

Shame on me for being the laziest blogger ever to blog. I do apologize for not giving you any updates on my petite boutique and all it's greatness in the last little while.

Here are some updates:

In Toronto, it rained all of April. This, you know. But did you know that we carry Fulton Umbrellas, and they are the coolest? They have definitely been a favourite at the shop as of late.

Look how much these people like theirs!

And why wouldn't they be ecstatic? Fulton Umbrellas are from the UK, where it rains the most ever. So you KNOW they're fab. They are built with wind resistant frames...so there aint no flyin' up and out with these babies. The best part? They hold a Royal Warrant, to Her Majesty The Queen, and previously to Her Majesty The Queen Mother. This is serious business.

Speaking of The Queen, her darling grandson was married this past month! If you acquaint yourself with such folk who attended/hosted High Tea, you may have adorned your pretty head with one of these beauties...

...and If you haven't already worn one, now you have an excuse to do so at your next shindig. If princess Beatrice can do it, you can too.

Another main event this past week was a day dedicated to the strongest people on the planet, Mothers. Happy Belated Mother's Day to all the ladies who have given life to another. You are all incredible...and if you received some accessories from us, know that they were wrapped in our gift bags with love.

So have we been busy? Yes, we have been. Between Spring Fever, Mom Love and a new hire (yes, a NEW HIRE! - Her name's Laura, you'll meet her soon), it's been a jam-packed few weeks. Stay tuned for fab new arrivals in the next couple of weeks. Keep it real.

Accessories CAN Save The World!

I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that some days end on a high note, and you feel generally amazing about life...and then some days are the opposite...and all you want, is a bowl of ice cream and some mindless, reality television. Yes, life gets challenging...but when I complain about my VERY fortunate life, I can't help but feel ridiculous, considering the situations that so many others are facing in the world. I get impatient when my elevator stops 10 times on the way down to the parking garage, yet thousands of people in Japan had their whole lives washed away in an instant.

As a business owner, I hold a responsibility to give back to the world that has given me so much. No one has placed that on me, I just feel it. And what immense joy there is in meeting others who feel the same way, and who take it many steps further to organize events, and bring people together who feel the need to contribute.

I have recently been given the opportunity to give back through some great initiatives that are worth mentioning. Although no one really NEEDS accessories, our accessories have been able to help those IN need.

Shop for the Cause

Nathalie-Roze Fischer, owner of amazing shop Nathalie-Roze & Co. is a superstar. Shop for the Cause: A Pop Up Sale for Japan, is the third Pop Up Nathalie-Roze has organized, in an effort to send relief to those who have been affected by Tsunami. Her ability to gather communities and shed light on an issue never goes unnoticed. This is the second time we were able to donate some of our goods, to be sold and have profits given to The Canadian Red Cross.

Corsage Project

The mission of this amazing charity, is to provide formal gowns and accessories, free of charge, to Toronto area high school girls who are unable to purchase their own prom attire. Every year, we focus on selling prom attire, but why not focus on giving it? This is the first year we participated in The Corsage Project, and are happy to continue this trend.

Hot for Hope

Tamika Auwai of Shop Socials, is an Event Planning Guru, and her next big thing is Hot for Hope, an evening of SPA-ing and SHOP-ing in uptown Toronto. Proceeds from the event are being donated to The Canadian Red Cross in support of Japan. I Heart Accessories is of course, taking part in the shop crawl fun. Click here for more info!

Our most popular hat in 2010 was without a doubt, the straw fedora. Something about the combination of sun hat and style was pleasing to all. Finally, we can protect our heads without looking like we are trying to protect our heads.

This spring...the fedora is back in full swing. We're seeing both the classic fedora in different colours, and a wider brimmed fedora with a slight cowgirl feel. With so many ways to wear this stylish topper, you really can't go wrong by picking one up at I Heart Accessories for just $24.

Art Is Where The Heart Is

I consider myself an artist. Not in the typical way you would envision an artist - i.e. a painter with her palette... But I do consider what I do to be art. I create, I love what I create, and put that creation out into the world so others can love it too.

I recently read the book Linchpin by Seth Godin, which was gracefully gifted to me by my good friend, Sally - an artist in every sense of the word. The book describes a way of life/work that encourages you to be the best you can be at whatever it is that you're doing, and to do so by making that work art, and showing the world how well you do your art. I'm not trying to sell you on this book, but it is worth a read if you're stuck between doing what you love, and doing what you feel you have to do in life.

That being said...one of the things I love about my business (and I've written about this before), is being able to help other artists, get their art out into the world. Although I Heart Accessories is still a tiny little baby girl, she's still very much in love with those who create, and does her best to promote those creations. We have loved selling local work, of all different types and styles, and want to do so even more as we grow. It helps those who create, and brings fresh new vibes to our shop each time a new piece is dropped off. Your Piece

I can't believe January has (thank the universe) slipped by so quickly and left me with only 1 written blog post. For those of you who follow and read...my mushy brain apologizes. I have felt like a crusty bear in hibernation for the last 30 days...and who can blame me with the painful weather that has been bestowed upon us? I digress. I'm here, I'm alive, and the worst is behind us. Who's ready for Spring-a-ling-a-ling?

I have been inspired by a dear friend to write this post. Natalie (we are same-namers) came in a few days ago with her pal Jen, and perused all of our new lovelies. She picked up a bracelet that I absolutely knew was her style. A beaded wrap bracelet in espresso, that she could effortlessly pull off as a daily piece.

When she picked it up...I instantly said "That's so you!". I should point out that although my job is to sell the items in my shop, I never do it with lines like "That's so you", or any other line for that matter...I'm less of a line girl and much more of a "if you're feelin' it, you should totally get it and make yourself happy" kinda girl. When she decided to make that baby hers, I mentioned a new book, which absolutely absorbed me on my last visit to Indigo. As one of two comfy chairs and myself became one, I licked my lips with each new page of "You Know You Want it: Style-Inspiration-Confidence" by Eric Daman.

Daman is the costume stylist for the television show Gossip Girl, and although the show's premise is less than interesting to me, the outfits keep me watching when I "accidentally" stumble upon it.

In the book, Daman discusses the idea of having "your piece". One of his simple fashion rules is that every girl (and guy, for that matter) needs a piece to call their own. A Carrie necklace, Audrey pearls or a Natalie wrap bracelet. Your piece is your piece...and although it won't define who you are, something unique may symbolize your personality...and I adore the idea. Daman's piece? Meaningful charms that hang on gold and silver chains around his neck. My piece? I seem to wear this little gal quite often...

Looking Forward

As I enjoyed a couple of days off from the shop while ringing in 2011, the business brain in me couldn't help but think about what this new year will bring to I Heart Accessories. 2010 was good to us...and since things can only get better, better than good is undoubtedly in the forecast.

With a new season just around the corner, we've already got our eyes and hearts set on some brilliant new pieces, thus, I thought I would post about things to look forward to in the next few months at the shop, and get you just as excited as I am. With a dash of I Heart flare, this season's trends are looking pretty fabuloso if I do say so myself.

Bridal

This year, we are putting a little more focus on brides and providing some trendy, inexpensive options for accessorizing both the belle of the ball, and her lovely ladies. The 2011 bride is all about feathers, flowers and crystal...three things we all adore.

This is one thing I personally look forward to every Spring! We didn't hesitate to paint our shelves with deep colours for Fall/Winter, and this season, we'll do the same with spring hues. Key Pieces

With clothing moving towards very flowy, longer pieces, i.e. the maxi dress shown below...accessories are definitely the ones that are taking shape this season.

Bags are looking more structured in 2011 along with my fave trend for spring, the belt purse.

Tassels are huge for spring, on clothing and with jewelry, in fabric and metal.

The turban is taking center stage this spring. Shown above, one from the new Headmistress 2011 Spring Collection.

Lastly, our 4th season carrying Lindsay Phillips will start with this new cutie-patutie! Lot's more colours and styles to come along with it.

Of course, the shop will also be bursting with new hats, shades, and jewels...but I couldn't help but share the joy with some pieces that will be totally new for us this Spring. I Can't wait for new arrivals! Seriously. I'm shakin' in my boots!

Birthday Week Love

Every year, I have a birthday week. There's a friend party, a boyfriend party, and a family party. And then of course there are dinners and coffee dates with friends here and there. Before you know it, a week has gone by and I'm feelin' good about the extra year. This year, my store stole my thunder in celebrating her first birthday, however, it was with extreme pleasure that I handed it over. The gal's been good to me.

We started off I Heart's birthday week with a fab 3-day sale of Buy 1 Get 1 50% off. Hats and scarves were flying out of here like nobody's business, and with our already amazing prices, lovelies had the chance to stock up for prezzies and stocking stuffers.

Later on in the week, we had a date with Shop Socials for our 1st birthday party. Maggie, our most favourite personal baker from Lovin' from the Oven, supplied us with deliciously pink and white cupcakes (dusted with real gold flakes), and guests shopped with a whopping 25% off everything in the store and free gifties.

Mad about HUE

Last night, I finally caught up on Mad Men. I won't go into details about my secret love for Don Draper, or my envy for all of the outfits that constantly make me wish I was my current age, back then (fashion reasons only). I won't spoil any of the juicy parts if you haven't seen it yet, however, the episode did have my mind wander into the world of fashion...as many things do when you've built your business around that world. Peggy works on a hosiery account that is afraid to promote the fact that their products are "the only a pair you'll ever need". After all, they have to rely on volume in order to survive, as most businesses do. I found it interesting how in the past women have looked at hosiery as something they NEED. A necessity in a shopping basket along with maxi pads and toothpaste.

We've come a long way with legwear. So much so, that now we call it legwear. Options have moved from neutral, sheer or opaque to a multitude of colours, textures and patterns. More than ever before, hosiery is something I WANT to wear, and I also want my pick. So, while other accessories have always served the purpose to embellish and just be there and be pretty, legwear has gone from a "need" to a very fashionable "want".

Here are three legwear trends I'm loving right now.

We gots cozy stuffs! I was like a little girl at Christmas when we received our shipment of winter lovelies the other day! I know, winter sucks the bag...but it doesn't have to suck as much when you look cute as a button...now does it?

So my excitement lead me to do something very vain...don't judge, it was pouring buckets outside and a quiet day in the boutique. Besides, we've all done a photo shoot of ourselves before. Haven't we...?

There have been some quiet days (as there are in all businesses), but those days have been spent making new connections, rearranging, filling orders and doing a general tidy-up of the boutique. Things can get pretty cluttered really quickly here...and setting everything straight always feels so much better!

It's really hard to believe how far I have come in such a short time. I will soon be hitting my one year mark at the shop complete with a party hosted by Shop Socials! I am SO looking forward to inviting all of my pals - old and new - who have been so supportive in my little endeavor. Really, if it weren't for the amazing people I have met along the way...I can't imagine where I'de be.

Last week I had an amazing email from my friend Erin, who talked about how incredibly happy she was for me and all that I have accomplished with my business! It's difficult for me to toot my own horn, as I always think there is so much more I could be doing. Sometimes, you think you're the only one who notices the things you have accomplished, so reading her email brightened my entire week.

I've also been thinking about my repeat customers lately. There are a lot of familiar faces who walk through my door everyday and every time I see one of those faces, I get a warm and fuzzy feeling. Many have mentioned that they skipped the big conglomerates who carry the same items, so that they could support I Heart Accessories! Really...? Could I be any more fortunate?

Sometimes I just need to step out of my life, realize all the awesomness that surrounds me and soak it all in. If you are reading this, thank you. Know that you are appreciated.

Eye for an I Heart

I traveled to Turkey in 2004 and of course, visited the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul while I was there. Aside from the knock-off perfumes, watches and the yelling salesmen, there is a certain type of mysterious allure in the Bazaar, which I personally think rings true throughout most middle eastern countries and culture. While walking through with my traveling buddies, I was instantly drawn to the numerous jewelry merchants and was dead set on leaving with at least one awesome piece of jewelry. Being away for two months, one piece was really all I had room for. Admittedly, I did leave with more than just one. As well as some scarves. And tea. Also spices.

One thing that did stand out for me at the time was the abundance of eyeballs staring at me. Not just by other people either. As every culture in the world has their own superstitions and good luck charms, the Turkish (along with many other Middle Eastern people) use the evil eye as a symbol to ward off evil.

I have to admit, I wasn't instantly drawn to the look of these beads 6 years ago, but now, I'm seeing them everywhere and they have become the universal symbol for "evil eye". Combined with the "Hamsa" (a similar token used in Judaism), accessory lovers are hyped over this new spiritual/good karma/superstitious trend!

And of course, my fave gal Madonna wearing her hamsa bling...

So as I am kicking myself for not picking up some genuine evil eyes while I was in Turkey...6 years later, I find myself carrying the trend in my very own boutique.

Piling on the Bling

While many fashionistas have mastered the art of layering clothing by now, many are still shying away from doing the same with jewelry. I personally have fallen in love with layering my baubles, and have made it a point to mention it to customers when they are looking to complete their outfits. I say, if you want to wear your whole accessories collection at once, go for it. Madonna did.

Confessions of an Accessorholic

I have a confession to make. Up until last week, all of my accessories lay in boxes in my closet. There, I've said it. I've come clean. My professional life was not neatly reflected in my personal life. I'm sorry. I really am, because for a year since I moved into my current place, I had not seen or heard from MANY of my accessories. I was lacking all the goodies that I could have been wearing all this time. I mean..I did OBVIOUSLY add to my collection over the past year, but was I ever missing out. I decided enough was enough. I needed everything on display where I could see it while getting dressed, instead of getting dressed and then trying to think of what accessories would go with my outfit. Pulling out boxes and searching for that one thing was getting a bit rediculous.

When we first opened the boutique, we were being asked for the stands that our jewelry was being displayed on. A woman actually came in and asked me to name a price for our necklace busts as she could not find them anywhere. Clearly, there is a demand for accessory organization in the world...so we decided to bring in some stands that we not only use for display, but can sell as well. Our customer's biggest complaints were that they couldn't see all of their accessories when it's hidden in a jewelry box, and needed something that looks nice, and will serve a purpose. SO, I am happy to say that I Heart Accessories now carries solutions for your accessory organizing needs.

My own pieces hang on a necklace and earring stand like this, with a separate one for bracelets (this one is sporting our new initial necklaces by iWear...do you?). The man in my life isn't completely crazy about seeing my bling in all it's coordinated glory, but hey, I've been staring at his guitar stand for years.

Have Your Cake

A customer came into the boutique one day and brought with her the most amazing scent. It was sweet like candy, but not candy, but delicious, like a cupcake, but not a cupcake...sugary, delicious, amazing goodness...but in the air. "What is that amazing scent?" I asked her. "Oh, I'm trying out this body cream called Cake, my friend gave it to me."

The brand is a popular one, and I had first seen it in Sephora while looking for a new facial cleanser. I couldn't resist picking up the little bottles with pretty pink writing and squirting a test into my hand. I remember loving the sweet scent but reminded myself to focus on the cleanser before dangerously letting myself get carried away.

A few weeks after that customer was in the boutique, I coincidentally had an email from Cake Beauty in my inbox. "We are hoping you would be interested in carrying our line of beauty products." Of course I would! If you know me well, you know that I have never resisted anything with the word "cake". So off I went to meet the ladies of this delicious brand and learned that not only does it smell incredible, but it is made with 90 - 95% high quality, natural ingredients. And for those who like to indulge without the nasty side-effects, their products are also 100% paraben-free. If that's not enough, Cake Beauty is Canadian made.

When the products arrived, my excitement took over as I opened all the testers and started sniffing, rubbing and spraying. I could eat it. Really, I could. I won't though. Instead, I will just use it, and tell you about how great it is. I have two favourites from the line.

Jewel Tones for Fall

When it comes to putting on jewelry, the most common choice I find myself making is between gold and silver. I love both and think I can pull off either, depending on my outfit. However, lately I find myself gearing towards rich, colourful pieces. This season, trends are really leaning towards gorgeous jewel tones, especially with accessories in deep pinks, purples, blues and reds. So far, fall is looking stunning!

In the boutique, we've paired some bright turquoise with some deep reds for a gorgeous transitional look into fall. Also spotted here (top shelf) is our Animal Print chain by iWEAR...do You?

We just brought in some beautiful statement pieces from L.A. and I am indeed loving all of them. The blue in this stretch cuff is THE perfect pop of colour to pair up with neutrals. Cuff - $24, Ring - $16.

I Heart gets Divafied

We were lucky enough and so very excited to be part of a fantastic event on August 5th: Divalicious 2 at The Roosevelt Room. Hosted by Divagirl Inc. and Shop Socials, this event gave women a night of exciting entertainment and fabulous shopping topped off with martinis...seriously...is there anything better?

Danielle and I were so happy to have a booth and showcase our fab finds at extra special prices. Divas were swooning over our jewels...and at a couple points in the night, we had little lines forming while others made their picks!

Of course, it wouldn't have been a Divalicious night without a Divafied Fashion Show. We were so very excited to be a part of this gorgeous display of incredible designs. Fab Finds for Fall

It's been an extremely busy past few weeks for us at the boutique as we have begun our transition from summer to fall. I'm a scarf girl. I always have been. As a teenager, I had a wall full of them and threw one on just about everyday. Scarves give you a great way to have fun with fashion, which is why I'm tres excited for our new collection of them. Here are a few ways I like to sport mine...

Hair

I'm loving these three looks by Monique Lhuiller, DianeVon Furstenberg, and, Nanette Lepore.

It's easiest to achieve this look with thinner scarves, which also makes them less likely to slip off your head.

Waist

A cinched waist is flattering for any shape...and having a little fun with a scarf or sash can brighten up your look without weighing you down.

OK..An obvious place to put a scarf, but keeping the look varied is key. I always love a bow tied to the side for a pretty, feminine look.

Blushing Baubles

With the 2010 Wedding Season well underway, I've had the pleasure of helping out a few brides-to-be with their selection of accessories for their big day, as well as some little lovelies for their group of gals. I had never set out to offer bridal services, but given the quality of the accessories we carry and the price points we offer, it's been a natural step in a very rewarding direction. Here are some bridal trends we're saying "I do" to this season.

Brides are adoring mini veils and feathery, flowery headpieces. Thank goodness there is a tres chic alternative to the traditional veil and tiara.

Working with various designers has become one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in opening my boutique. Having those designers be Canadian ups the warm and fuzzy feeling ten fold. With our home and native land turning 143 years young this week, I thought I would feature my most favourite (with a u) Canadian designs that we carry at I Heart Accessories.

Foxy Originals

Designed in Toronto by Jen Kluger and Suzie Orol, Foxy Originals are also made here with high quality pewter and then dipped in gold, silver and bronze. This line which is loved by celebrities like Kim Cattrall and Nelly Furtado, is fun, fashionable and full of life. The best part? the price point is great for jewellery manufactured in our own backyard. Pieces in our boutique range from $18 - $50.

Headmistress Accessories

Also living and creating in our precious Toronto, Canada - Jillian Wood's feather accessories have exploded internationally. From hippie headbands to cocktail rings, each piece is uniquely hand dyed and assembled with real feathers and vintage adornments. Prices at I Heart Accessories range from $18 - $45.

iWEAR...do you?

Toronto Mastermind Dawn Pilpel initially started iWEAR...do you? as a clothing line, and in 2005, expanded into a jewelry and accessories line made with hardware. That's right. Hardware...from a hardware store. This is the first and only Toronto-made, industrial chic line of its kind, and we are so happy to represent it at I Heart Accessories! With new pieces coming in weekly, it's been difficult to keep in stock. Although we tend to carry the more price-conscious pieces in the line (starting at $16), Dawn has been able to create several including Classic, Funky, High end and Custom pieces. Didn't think hardware could be pretty? Think again.

Luli Designs

Created by Designer Louisa Whitfield, Luli has become a sure favourite to our customers. Her designs are simple, pretty and elegant, but most importantly, this Vancouver based artist prides herself on designing wearable jewellery for all occasions. She even creates custom jewellery for brides and their girls. Everything is made with Sterling Silver or Bronze and adorned with swarovski crystals and precious stones.

If you ask me, home grown talent is where it's at. Stop by I Heart Accessories for a full perusal of our lovely Canadian-made lines and shop locally, it'll do a body good.

Hat Hang-Ups

"I don't look right in hats". I hear this comment a lot. "Not true!" I exclaim...and then I instantly begin to feel like I'm being too pushy. I guess I just never realized how many women had hang-ups with hats until I opened I Heart Accessories. I agree, something is on your head. However, it's not a bowl of fruit. Hear me.

I bought my boyfriend Jeremy a hat a couple months ago. It was a grey newsboy cap, one that I thought would look fabulous on him. And it did. And he wore it. He wore it to go to the grocery store for milk, and I *think* on the way to a shoot at 6 a.m. one morning. Both times, knowing he would not be seen by the Style Police. This is a guy who will wear fake glasses to achieve the geek-chic look and Sadler Shoes when Vince Vaughan did in Swingers. This is not a guy who's afraid of wearing accessories - or Props, as I like to call them for my performer of a partner. "Why do you never wear your hat?" I asked one day. "I don't think I look right in it" was his answer. "Don't get me wrong, I love the hat, I just think I look weird in them."

I guess I have a hat bias. I tend to purchase one everywhere I go, and keep a nice selection in the shop. A few summers ago, I purchased a checkered cadet from Miss Swiss in Montreal, and last year I picked up a Men's fedora from a sale table at The Bay. This year I tend to sport my own collection. I've always been a hat person - I just love them, and find so many uses for them. Bad hair day coverage, rain/sun protection, disguise, style...whatever the case may be, I enjoy having things on my head. This isn't the case for a LOT of women, and I just can't help but feel like so many of us are letting our lives pass us by without having hats for friends, just because we put the words "silly" and "hat" together when we try one on. I'm sure if I owned a store in the U.K., this wouldn't be a blog topic. It would more likely be about all the fabulosity that was worn on heads at the Royal Ascot Horse Races.

I mean, isn't the U.K. known for it's more reserved style? And they're topping North Americans in the hat department? Of course, when we go there, we can get away with it. Much like Sarah Jessica Parker at her Sex and the City premiere in London.

While we haven't gone so far as to carry fairy gardens for the head, we do have some pretty sweet styles that I have taken a liking to, and think all women should have at least one of. Here are my top 5 choices for Summer - who knows? maybe you'll give them a try the next time you see them sitting on a shelf?

#1 - The Cadet Hat

Safe and sporty, this hat is the perfect casual accessory. I like to tie my hair in a low side pony tail and wear this with jeans and a tee. These particular ones stretch with a sewn in elastic band for extra comfort.

#2 - The Fedora

Chic yet casual, this seasons fedoras are just my fave. The straw makes it more casual, and gives you the option to wear it from the city to the beach. We also have some with rainbow ribbons that have been faves of our teenage customers.

#3 - The Beach Hat

Floppy and flirty, this is a must-have for any sun goddess. Do yourself a favor and save your face the unnecessary skin damage...also, look cute while doing it.

#4 - The Sun Hat

These aren't just for old ladies anymore. A cute sun hat is the perfect addition to a sun dress, a pair of sandals and a laid back hobo bag. This is your going-to-the-fruit-market-hat.

#5 - The Headpiece

Ok, not really a hat. BUT, a really nice alternative to the British styles above. Fascinators have been the most popular head-wear this season. From feathers, to flowers and for party-goers to brides, these pieces make the most out of a simple do.

I've given you a lot to think about here. To hat, or not to hat. Or maybe not. In any case...I urge you to step outside of the box and into a stylish accessory to top off your look. You'll be happy you did.

Lindsay Phillips Makes my Heart Sing

One of the many perks of doing the buying for I Heart Accessories, is that I can order things I love and one of my favourite things in the boutique right now is the whole Lindsay Phillips collection. From her reversible bags, to the adorable flip flops, I really can't get enough. Not only am I completely in love with everything about the brand, but customers are also really loving it for the versatility and over-all cuteness!

Lindsay Heart Throb #1

The wristlets have been a big hit and come in 4 styles - Black and White (shown), Pewter, Black and Brown Floral. The hobo bags are reversible with a solid colour inside and the flower pin comes off and can be moved around, or pinned somewhere else. How can we NOT love these?

As for the shoes, Lindsay's Ballet Flats still remain the most comfy shoe I've ever tried on (not to mention the adorable snaps that are available to change up your look). The flats come in 3 colours (black, white gold and bronze - all napa leather), as well as a leopard print which I love more than words can say.

These buttons snap on and off the top of the shoe, giving it a different look to match as many outfits as your little heart desires!

Lindsay Heart Throb # 3

As I myself am not a huge flat-shoe-wearer due to my god-given fallen arches, I had a bit of an excitement attack when I realized that Lindsay had come up with these little dollies.

The Evie Espadrille was made for me. First of all, I need both colours. One is not enough. Secondly, words can not express the comfort in these shoes. Lindsay has a way of making your feet feel like they are on cushy pillows in ALL of her shoes. Lastly, can we take a moment to look at those delicious little bows please?

I myself, am so thrilled to be sporting my Evies in White Gold today, with the Milena Snap. I paired them up with some cuffed jeans, a red striped top, and some jewellery from iWEAR...do you? in gold and pearl. I'm hearting this season's nautical look big-time!

A Single Bloom

I'm starting to grow a really great customer base and I must say, it makes me want to do a happy dance. When I first opened my boutique, I was doing well for someone who had JUST opened and had zero following. There was great foot traffic, people loved what they saw when they came in, and many people purchased. Two of my many coaches and entrepreneurial heroes (my parents) kept saying "just wait until people are familiar with you!". Well now they are starting to be, and it's great. Really great.

A return customer came in yesterday with an accessory 'dilemma'. That's what she called it, which made me smile and eager to help. She had been in twice before, each time picking things from my more higher end lines and being completely happy with her purchases. I should add that this customer doesn't necessarily see herself as an accessory "person", but in my opinion, can totally pull great pieces off...and is starting to agree. This time, she had purchased a dress somewhere and they had recommended some accessories to her, but she decided to come back to me and see what I had. Within 15 minutes, she had found accessories for that particular outfit AND some for another outfit she had in mind. She ended her visit with the words - "I knew you would have exactly what I needed!". HELLO! Does this woman know that she just made my entire day? No, my week. My life, really. It was enough that you came back to my very intimate space to shop once again, but then to tell me you had faith that I would solve your big dilemma and then the bonus dilemma? that's just way too much sugar for my little heart.

I guess this seems like a big deal to me at this stage because my business is the new kid on the block, and I'm really just looking forward to surviving my first year (5 months to go...just sayin'). I'm quite happy that I'm a big emotional nerd and can look at these little signs as a reflection of all of my hard work and as a big arrow pointing in the direction of my future success. There's no question that starting a business comes along with challenges. Do it by yourself, and you're throwing in a whole other set of ups and downs. Make it retail, and well, do you believe in God? It's just nice to know that, along those peaks and valleys that are sometimes smooth green grass, and sometimes laden with prickly weeds, a single, pretty, awesome little flower is sure to bloom eventually.

On May 20th, Shop Socials hosted Shopping After Dark at I Heart Accessories. This private shopping party was invite only, with cocktails, fortune telling and mingling across the street at Cam's Place, and socialite shopping in small groups in our boutique. The event was a smashing success, and Snap North Toronto came to capture it all.

Everyone Shopped with a 20% - 50% discount and received a complimentary cosmetic case with $60 purchase. To say people took advantage of these promotions would be an understatement. These ladies SHOPPED!

Working with Tamika from Shop Socials was a great experience and I'm so happy to have met her. She's professional, hard-working and beautiful! Not to mention...so lovable. It's no wonder all these women flock to her amazing events. Her swag bags were fab as always, jam-packed with goodies from Nourishtea, Pur Minerals and Calvin Klein to name a few.

Q: What’s in a name? How’d you come up with “I Heart Accessories”?

A: I wanted the name to be personal, but also something other women could relate to. I’ve always been in love with buying and wearing accessories because you can do so much with some fab pieces and a simple wardrobe, and I wanted to attract other women who feel the same. The very first day I opened my boutique, my first customer walked through the door with the most excited expression on her face and said “You think YOU heart accessories? I HEART accessories!” At that moment, I knew I chose the right name.

Q: What kind of clientele does I Heart Accessories cater to?

A: I Heart Accessories caters to the trend-loving, price-conscious female who enjoys having fun with fashion. We have women of all ages who just can’t resist shopping here because our accessories are fabulous and our prices are so reasonable. We even have quite a few men who have made us their go-to shop for buying gifts for their gals.

Q: What are your favourite accessory trends this season?

Straw Fedora's $24 each

1. Fedoras: Our Spring/Summer Fedoras are so hot right now, and are so versatile. The colourful, straw styles we carry can be worn shopping in the city, or lounging on the beach.

Statement ring - $16

2. Statement Rings: The bigger the better. With so many fun styles and colours to choose from, it’s impossible to not fall in love with big rings this season. Pair one up with a cute pair of earrings and a sun dress, and you’re ready for Summer!

Oversized floral headband - $24

3. Headbands: I’m loving them in all shapes and sizes from the skinny, studded type to the over-sized rose band, and they’re the perfect finishing touch to any outfit – day or night.

Q: Who’s your style icon?

A: If Sarah Jessica Parker and Zooey Deschanel had a Love Child, she would be my style icon. I love the fashion- forward look S.J.P can effortlessly pull off, and the retro-indie-cuteness that Z.D has fun with.

Q: What’s your favourite piece in-store today?

A: It’s REALLY hard to choose just one, but I just recently got in a new shipment of watches, and bought one for myself because I loved it so much. It’s a Man-Watch made feminine and comes in 4 finishes – white, black, gold and silver. I had to have the white as it’s just too perfect for everything Summer! (We agree!)

Well, here we are. Me, my boutique and my blog...all I'm missing is a puppy. This will be good. I can feel it. Only goodness can come from a place with so much heart...am I right?

My name is Natalie, and I live in Toronto. I love accessories, so I decided to make it my career and open a boutique.

I opened the door to my boutique in November, 2009, and have been like a kitten with a ball of yarn ever since. It makes me happy. Really, really, happy.

I called my boutique "I Heart Accessories" for a couple reasons. For one, I really do heart accessories, and I know that lots of other women do too....so I wanted a name that was personal, and that other women could relate to. Secondly, my heart is in this for the long haul. From each piece that enters my boutique to the bows on my packaging as they leave, everything has been stamped with my love. This really is where I give all of my best.

So here I sit, in my pretty in pink boudoir-style boutique, and write away on my little laptop.This blog is intended to share my experiences, thoughts, findings, feelings, adventures and general happenings of the industry, and my life as a young, femmepreneur. I'm really looking forward to sharing...and I'm glad you stopped by.
